In April, the Municipality of Port Hope Council approved a rezoning application for the New Awakenings Wellness Centre, a privately-owned treatment centre for men dealing with alcohol and drug abuse. The treatment centre, which recently opened in late-June, is operating out of a 19th century mansion that was previously a bed and breakfast. The zoning amendment application permits the use of 9 rooms for a maximum of 20 clients.
In order to thoroughly address resident, staff and Council questions over the sensitive nature of the use, Weston Consulting led two separate community open house events. These open houses, held at the subject property, included presentations on the proposal and allowed the local community to learn about the project and ask questions directly with New Awakenings. Weston Consulting also assisted in the coordination of a community liaison community to act as an informal setting for open dialogue and discussion between local residents and New Awakenings.
As a result of successful coordination and dialogue between residents, staff, Council and the client, the application received unanimous support by Council and no appeals were submitted.
